Brief Bio

Andrea Meier is a research associate professor in the School of Social Work. As a qualitative methods specialist on the staff of the School of Public Health’s CHAI Core she provides technical assistance to researchers in the Schools of Public Health and Medicine on the use of qualitative methods and data analysis in proposals and during project implementation. Since 2001, she has been leading workshops on focus group facilitation and designs project-specific trainings in qualitative methods on request. She has collaborated on over 60 projects which have used mixed methods to investigate a diverse array of health related concerns across the lifespan, including: parenting behavior with young children at risk for obesity; parent and provider perspectives on parental involvement with their adolescent children’s health care; new approaches to disseminating faith based programs in obesity prevention for adults; group walking programs for adults with arthritis; and family, staff and patient perspectives on a “good death” in long term care facilities. Dr. Meier’s substantive area is the use of Internet technology to provide social support and the use of qualitative research methods in studies of health related online support groups. She was a co-investigator in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation study on Health e-Communities, which included analyses of email messages from cancer survivors and caregivers on 10 mailing lists hosted by the Association for Cancer Online Resources. She has also conducted online in depth interviews with ACOR listowners about best practices for the development and facilitation of health related e-communities. Findings from these interviews have been used to create an online, wiki (interactive Web site) to train listowners in list facilitation and e-community management.
