Brief Bio

Debashis “Deb” Aikat is associate professor and media futurist in the UNC-CH School of Journalism and Mass Communication. An award-winning researcher and teacher of journalism and interactive media, Aikat was named the inaugural winner of the Scripps Howard’s National Journalism Teacher of the Year (2003) award for “distinguished service to journalism education.” His work has appeared in refereed research publications of the IRTS, ACM SIGDOC, Microsoft Corporation, Electronic Journal of Communication/La Revue Electronique de Communication, and Convergence: The Journal of Research into New Media Technologies. He has served as a reviewer for J&C Monographs, J&MC Communication Quarterly, Journal of Communication and leading publishers such as McGraw-Hill, Oxford University Press and Sage Publications. Besides teaching on-campus courses, Aikat has taught distance education (DE) courses since 1997. He developed in 2003 a graduate-level DE certificate program in technology and communication. Aikat has a CAPC from New York University and a PhD from Ohio University.
