Brief Bio

In June 2007 I accepted a research scientist position at the Institute on Aging, and an adjunct assistant professor position at the UNC Division of Physical Therapy. My research focuses on several aspects of healthy aging including developing effective exercise-based interventions to prevent falls in community dwelling older adults, and assessing associations between participation in cognitive, social, physical and exercise activities and performance on cognitive and physical assessments. I am involved in projects to disseminate evidence based health promotion programs to older adults in North Carolina, to develop a state wide North Carolina falls prevention coalition and a local falls screening clinic at the new Chapel Hill Senior Center, and I am continuing with my dissertation work. I teach the geriatric content to the master's and doctorate physical therapy students and I co-teach geriatric functional assessment to third year medical students.

Areas of Interest in Aging

falls screening and prevention; identifying factors that promote healthy aging; translation of evidence-based physical activity programs into community settings; balance interventions; evaluating and treating older adults for musculoskeletal disorders, development of geriatric content for medical school, residents, and practicing physicians
